Rio De Janeiro
Urbanisation is an increase in the proportion of a countries population that lives in towns and cities. The two main causes of urbanisation are natural population growth and migration into urban areas from rural areas.

Rio De Janeiro is located in the South of Brazil and is the second largest city in the country with a population of just over six million citizens.

Issues
Due to Brazil being an LEDC many of its population are living in poor conditions, some even living without a viable source of food. These places have a lack of jobs meaning that people are 'pulled' into Rio De Janeiro by the 'Bright Lights Sydrome' as people presume that as soon as they move enter the city they will be flooded with jobs and homes, that is not the case. Due to Rio De Janeiro being overwhelmed by the masses of people flooding into the city looking for a better life slums have been set up on the border of the city, these slums are dangerous places to live, in most cases they are poorly policed if at all causing a surge in crime and in some cases gangs to form. The structures in slums are poorly built meaning that if weather conditions take a turn for the worse the people living in them are in danger. Poverty and disease also spreads through the slums as there is a lack of income meaning that they can not afford the essentials. Slums usually set up near sewage lines causing the slums water supplies to become contaminated causing disease to spread.

Solutions
The governing body that manages Rio De Janeiro have used many different methods to try and improve the situation that is the slums, such as supplying the slums with utilities such as electricity supplies, clean water supplies and in some cases placing roads around the slums. The slums population have also been given the deeds to the buildings they are living in and supplying them with building materials to improve their homes. The government hopes that the overall outcome will improve the hygeine and safety of these slums as well as the look as from the city the slums are a huge eyesore. Crime is also being tackled by policing the area so that crime is cut.
