In the Mid-eighteenth century Notting Hill was nothing but a hamlet.A hamlet is a community of people smaller than a village. in those days Notting Hill was known for its graval pits and roadside inns. Industrialisation brought workers from the countryside, with landlords building tiny terraced houses to rent out to them. During the Second World War, Notting Hill was seriously bombed leaving many of the buildings badily damaged or destroyed completely. In 1958, it was the scene of race riots between the Afro-Caribbean community and the teddy boys of the fascist British Union. A second riot took place during the infamous Notting Hill Carnival of 1976, in which over 100 police officers were injured.

Recently the area of Notting Hill has changed due to gentrification. Gentrification is the treatment of working-class and derelict housing and the consequent transformation of an area into a middle-class neighbourhood. Gentrification to the buildings caused the house prices to increse reapidly.
